Bald Eagle Sighting in Riverton, Connecticut

This actually occurred this past Monday, but it is an appropriate post for any time, I think.

Saw my very first bald eagle this week. Well, at least one that wasn't in a cage or on TV. I knew they nested in Connecticut in certain spots but I had never actually seen one.

Coincidentally, I was out riding when I saw it. My friends and I were taking a break at the bridge in Riverton . My buddy looked up and pointed the majestic bird out. Unfortunately I had left my good camera in the tail bag on my bike. The eagle circled the river a couple of times as I was trying to get my cell phone camera app to load on my smart phone. By the time the camera was ready, the eagle had moved down stream and out of site as if to say, no you shall not have any pictures of me silly human.

I will say that it was one of the most amazing sights I have seen, especially since it was so close to us. It was a fitting end to this Independence Day weekend (we were off work today).

My real point is that the sight, coupled with the fact we were out riding and being free, reminds me of how great a country we live in; that we are afforded the basic freedoms that people in many other countries can only dream about. Even something as simple as sitting on a bridge over a river, watching a national symbol fly by.

I guess the moral would be don't take what we consider the simple pleasures in life for granted.
