The Wave

So I went out for a ride today and I realized something: Not all waves are the same, but they do have the same meaning. It's a universal sign of acknowledgment that says you belong. Whether it's the low "I'm too cool for words" wave, or a simple two fingers off the bar salute, when a rider passes another rider the customary greeting is rendered.

I happen to be one of those guys that waves at everyone. You could be on a CBR, a VStrom, a Fatboy or a Goldwing; it doesn't matter. Hell, I even wave at scooters. Now, there are some that don't return the wave. I used to think, "I am not waving at them until they wave back", but I have come to the conclusion that, "Who cares???" Maybe they are focused on the road ahead. Maybe they like being a lone wolf. Maybe they just don't get it yet. I know, I know. It's not a big deal. It's just a wave. But it is a big deal because it is one of those unexplained phenomena that just happens when you start riding.

From the day I first started to now, I have acknowledged and have been acknowledged by nearly every other rider that I pass. It's become a gesture of a brotherhood (and sisterhood too) that extends beyond the boundaries of ethnicity, country of origin, social stature, and even gender. When you ride, you tend to ignore all the political garbage that pops up in our day to day lives and you join a society where everyone gets along and is part of the same group.

My wife and I were out riding the other day so I gave her a job. I told her that her job was to wave at bikes coming the other way. It gave her something to do and allowed her to be a part of the phenomena. As each rider passed by us, she held up her hand and waved it back and forth as if to say "Hi There!". Nothing wrong with it as she is the happy friendly sort. I am more of a low and to the side kind of guy.

So, what kind of waver are you? Do you wave at everyone or just the same type of bike you are on? Are you a low two finger peace guy or do you just raise your fingers as you pass? Or do you not wave at all? Whatever the case, I am happy to be part of this society. Ride Safe!
